Several combinations of preplant and sidedress N at various growth stages were evaluated. Maize grain yields were maximized with 90 kg N ha-1 preplant followed by 90 kg N ha-1 sidedress at V6 or V10 (8 of 9 site-years). Delaying N application until V10 growth stage when preplant N was applied did not result in lower yields. Mid-season N supplies fertilizer at the time when crop need and N uptake are at a maximum, and thus facilitates more efficient N use. Lowest nitrogen use efficiencies (NUE) were observed with higher N rates and when all N was applied preplant. Highest NUE's were achieved with 45 kg N ha-1 preplant followed by 45 kg N ha-1 sidedress applied at V6 growth stage (8 of 9 site-years) and at V10 (6 of 9 site-years).

Effect of nitrogen consumption management on morphophysiological traits, yield and yield components of corn hybrids (Zea mays L.)

In order to investigate the effect of nitrogen management on morphophysiological traits, yield and yield components of corn hybrids, the present experiment was carried out in a split plots arrangement in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications in a field located in Ahvaz city during the crop year 2016-2017. Experimental treatments consisted of nitrogen fertilizer management ...

Maize (Zea mays L.) Response to Nitrogen Fertilizer under Drought Stress at Vegetative and Reproductive Stages

In the sub-tropics, water and nitrogen are the most important factors limiting the grain yield of maize. The effect of nitrogen (N) rates and drought stress at different growth stages of maize were investigated. Nitrogen treatments consisted of 100, 150, and 200  kgN.ha-1 from the urea source while water stress treatments were composed of irrigation-off since the early 10-leaf stage to emergenc...

Effects of Soil Supplementation with Urea and Magnesium on Nitrogen Uptake, and Utilization by Two Different Forms of Maize (Zea mays L.) Differing in Senescence Rates

This paper presents the effect of soil supplementation with urea and magnesium on nitrogen uptake and its utilization by two different types of hybrid maize cultivars. Based on the results of 3-year fertilization studies, it was shown that for average volume of grain yield of maize, nitrogen content in grain dry matter and nitrogen uptake with its yield was significantly determined by the doses...
